What's on the globe

23 layers. 40-odd data sources. One place.

Normally you'd need a flight tracker, a ship tracker, a weather app, a surf app, a satellite site and a council website or two. Here it's all one switch away, and it all runs on the same clock, so you can watch a storm roll in, rewind it and see the lightning again.

Our own ears on the sky

We don't just borrow the planes. We listen for them.

Plenty of map sites just pull someone else's feed. Living Earth has its own antenna. A software-defined radio tuned to 1090 MHz sits on the same Raspberry Pi 5 that runs the rest of the planet, decoding the ADS-B messages every passing aircraft broadcasts: position, height, speed, callsign. Those messages go straight into the adsb.lol community network, and feeding the network is what opens up its worldwide feed to us. Every plane on the globe is a two-way deal.

Demo mode

Twenty seconds idle, and it starts hunting.

Walk away and the globe locks on to things by itself: a satellite with its NORAD number, height and speed, the latest quake, the busiest storm, the hottest and coldest places in view. Touch anything and it hands straight back.

And it's not a painted backdrop. The Sun and the Moon sit exactly where they really are at that moment, worked out from Meeus's lunar theory, and the Moon wears NASA's real surface map, turned the way it really faces us.

A free forecast board for any surf shop.

One link turns a TV into a forecast board. It laps through the shop's own breaks, 12 seconds each, then shows the best of Cornwall right now. The wave is drawn against a 1.71 m surfer, so "6–8 ft" actually means something.

  • A confidence rating for each day. We compare the latest run with the runs from 6, 12 and 18 hours before. When the models keep changing their minds, the card says so.
  • What to wear. A plain answer, worked out from the numbers. No guessing.
  • Five activity modes. Surf, sail and kite, snow, gliding and stargazing each swap in the rows that matter, from swell periods to cloud base to sky darkness.

Under the hood

No game engine. No globe library. Written from the metal up.

We're boiling the ocean here, on purpose. Living Earth is hand-written TypeScript and WebGPU with exactly two runtime dependencies. Here's what it takes to put 29,000 satellites, 10,000 planes and a live weather model on a phone at close to 60 frames a second.

Orbital mechanics on the GPU

The full SGP4/SDP4 model for every object, every frame

The standard satellite model, deep-space resonance terms and all, ported line for line to a compute shader. WGSL has no 64-bit floats, so we emulate them: each hot term is two 32-bit floats (about 48 bits), with our own branch-free sine, cosine and arctangent. One dispatch a frame, no allocation.

Ask the Earth.

Every number on this globe, live and searchable by just asking. Ask the Earth puts a large language model on top of every feed we ingest, so you can talk to the planet in plain English and watch the globe answer: it flies the camera, switches on the right layers, rewinds the clock and tells you what it found, with the source and the time for every figure.

01

It reads the live data, not the internet. The model gets tools for every layer (aircraft, quakes, lightning, surf, rivers, buses and the rest) and pulls the actual records from our own feeds.

02

It drives the globe. Answers come with actions: fly here, follow that plane, turn on currents, rewind six hours. You see the answer as well as read it.

03

Every figure is cited. Each number carries its source and timestamp. If the data isn't there, it says so instead of making something up.

04

It joins the dots. The interesting questions cross layers: rain upstream and a river already high, a good swell and a pollution warning, a clear sky and an ISS pass.

ASK THE EARTHEXAMPLE CONVERSATION
Where's the best surf in Cornwall at first light tomorrow, and is the water clean?
Watergate Bay looks best: 6–8 ft on an 11-second west-north-west swell, rated 5 stars, with low tide at 11:47. The Perranporth buoy is reading 2.3 m right now, so the swell is arriving as forecast. No pollution warnings on that stretch today. Fistral is close behind at 5–7 ft.
FLY TO NEWQUAYSURF LAYER ONOPEN WATERGATE CARD
And what's that plane circling over Newquay?
I'll lock on to it and show you its track. If it's in range of our receiver, you're seeing it from our own antenna.
